Gingerbread biscuits and festive lights – it must be almost Christmas 2023.If you are a fan of Christmas, it is always exciting when the festive lights are switched on in our towns. The lights in my hometown of Wakefield were turned on last week and I was lucky enough to be invited into the cathedral to a small party an hour before the lights went on.

We were served mulled wine, Prosecco and canapés, and there it was as warm as toast and very beautiful.

At the agreed time we went out and got Rhubarb Radio ready to do the countdown; five, four, three, two, one… and continued to a roar of applause.

There was also a whole weekend of attractions and activities, including a small Christmas market.

On Saturday I was working in the Cabalgatas organizing the last of the children’s workshops this year.

Naturally, I had set a Christmas theme and baked gingerbread cookies for the kids to decorate with royal icing, candies, and candy canes.

Dave from Rhubarb Radio caught up with me before I packed up and headed home.

We had a few minutes of conversation on the air, mainly about the workshops, but also about the preparation of the Christmas meal.

He has invited me to do a whole show with him before Christmas so we can talk about our favorite holiday drinks and appetizers.

I have already started baking and freezing some things for the holiday period.

Good things to make are sausage rolls, quiche, and mince pies.

With sausage rolls and mince pies, you can freeze them raw or cooked, but either way, it’s the prep time that you’ve saved.

I already have my pickled onions in jars, but it’s not too late to make some, nothing like a crispy pickled onion with your boxing day buffet!

I have finished feeding my Christmas cakes with brandy and now I go on with them and cover them with marzipan.

The only thing I haven’t started on yet is actual shopping, always a bit of an ordeal for me, as I’ve never really liked wandering around stores.
